NC First Alert Weather | Snow is not expected in North Carolina next week, despite social media headlines

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — There’s been a lot of chatter about snow in North Carolina next week on social media. The bottom line is, it’s going to be too warm.

A few days back, some global weather models were showing a wintry mix over parts of North Carolina next week. Models beyond 7 days out are completely unreliable.

Here’s what we know: An area of low pressure will move through the southeast next Monday into Tuesday. With no cold air in place already, this is likely to fall as rain.

Additionally, the track of the low pressure isn’t favorable for snow as the center of the low would be right over us. This will keep relatively warm air in place over most of our state.

For us to get a decent accumulation of snow here in Central NC, cold air has to be in place before moisture ever moves in. We typically see more setups that favor snow in January and February.

When there is cause for concern regarding winter weather, we will be sure to let you know with plenty of lead time.
