Helen Mirren broke her rule to be in my film, says Kate Winslet

Dame Helen Mirren broke her rule for choosing acting roles to star in Kate Winslet’s latest film, the Titanic actress has claimed.

Winslet, 50, directed and starred in the Christmas film Goodbye June, which was written by her son Joe Anders, and follows four siblings whose lives changed when their mother’s health worsened during the festive period.

Speaking on the BBC’s The Graham Norton Show, Winslet said that Dame Helen had originally told her she would not be able to join the cast.

She said: “When I was telling her about the film, she said, ‘I am going to stop you because I have two personal rules, I will not play anyone with dementia or anyone with cancer.’

“She still asked to see the script, and then she sent me an email saying she was breaking her own rule because it was such a wonderful project.”
