XG’s Cocona Comes Out as Transmasculine and Nonbinary

In a heartfelt announcement, Cocona, a member of the hip-hop and R&B-inspired group XG, revealed their identity as transmasculine and nonbinary in a birthday post shared on the group’s official Instagram account. The 20-year-old took the occasion of their birthday to express a significant personal truth that they had been harboring for an extended period.

“Today, I turned 20. As I reach this new chapter in my life, I want to share something that’s been in my heart for a long time,” Cocona began the post, announcing their identity as AFAB (assigned female at birth) transmasculine non-binary. They also shared the experience of undergoing top surgery earlier in the year, marking a significant step in their journey of self-acceptance.

In the statement, Cocona elaborated on their experiences of identity, stating, “I was born and perceived as female, but that label never represented who I truly am. I live in a way that feels more masculine and true to who I am.” The rapper candidly recounted the struggles of embracing their authentic self, reflecting on the transformative moment that changed their perspective on life and fueled their personal growth. “Now, I can finally say, ‘There’s nothing wrong with who I am inside,’” they affirmed.

Cocona expressed profound gratitude to their fellow group members, the group’s producer and label CEO, Simon Jakops, and their parents for their unwavering support throughout this journey. This supportive network has played a vital role in helping Cocona reach this point in their life. “I am grateful for every miracle that brought us together and led me to this path,” Cocona wrote.

XG, which debuted in 2022, is a seven-member group that includes Cocona alongside team members Jurin, Chisa, Hinata, Harvey, Juria, and Maya. The announcement marks a milestone not only in Cocona’s personal life but also within the broader conversation surrounding gender identity and representation in the music industry.
