Trump urges Republicans to end filibuster amid Supreme Court reform debate

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Trump is urging Republicans to eliminate the Senate filibuster in response to comments made by former Obama administration Attorney General Eric Holder. Holder suggested that Democrats should prioritize Supreme Court reform in an appearance on “The MeidasTouch Podcast” last month.
Trump seized on these remarks, calling Holder an “Obama sycophant,” as part of a string of posts on Truth Social he made Monday night. The president posted or reposted around 160 times in a span of four hours. (TNND)
“If there is a Democratic trifecta in 2028, and I think the possibility of that is pretty good, Supreme Court reform is something that has to be considered. Term limits I think at a minimum, potentially expanding the court, is something I think that also should be considered,” Holder said.
Trump seized on these remarks, calling Holder an “Obama sycophant,” as part of a string of posts on Truth Social he made Monday night. The president posted or reposted around 160 times in a span of four hours.
“Democrats will PACK the Supreme Court of the United States if they get the chance,” Trump wrote. “The word is, he wants 21 Radical Left Activist Judges, not being satisfied with the heretofore 15 that they were seeking. It will be 21, they will destroy our Constitution, and there’s not a thing that the Republicans can do about it.”
The debate over court reform has intensified in the years following controversial Supreme Court decisions, notably the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the nationwide right to an abortion. This ruling significantly impacted the court’s favorability among Democrats, with a Pew Research Center survey showing only half the country views the high court favorably, down from 70% in 2020. The survey also highlighted a partisan divide, with 71% of Republicans viewing the justices positively compared to just 26% of Democrats.
Former President Biden supported reforms and pushed for them as his time in office drew to a close.
“I’m certain we need these reforms. We need these reforms to restore trust in the court, preserve the systems of checks and balances that are vital to our democracy,” he said at an event in July of 2024.
The reforms included term limits, a code of ethics, and a constitutional amendment that took away Presidential immunity for crimes committed while in office. He did not endorse court packing.
Trump, however, is using Holder’s comments to push Republicans to “TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER,” arguing it would lead to easy victories in the 2026 and 2028 elections. He started increasingly pushing for eliminating the filibuster as the government shutdown dragged on earlier this year.
“Republicans need to get off their butts and move and that’s what the president wants to see them do and that’s what the American people are expecting,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told the “Pod Force One” podcast in November.
Despite Trump’s pressure, both House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have stated that the filibuster is not currently under threat.
