The Only Dexter Show That Hasn’t Been Cancelled Scores Big on Streaming Ahead of Season 2

It has certainly been a roller coaster year for Dexter fans who have been treated to new shows like Resurrection, but also their fair share of bad news. The Dexter franchise returned late in 2024 in the form of Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series starring Patrick Gibson as the famous serial killer. After originally announcing that the series had been renewed for Season 2, Paramount later went back on its word and announced that it had been cancelled. The only thing left to ease this pain for Dexter fans was the newly released Resurrection sequel series, which even returned Michael C. Hall to the role of Dexter.

The first season of Dexter: Resurrection is streaming in its entirety on Paramount+, where it’s one of the most popular shows in the world, charting in the top 10 and more than 15 countries globally. This can partially be credited to it being the only Dexter show still left standing, as Original Sin isn’t the only Dexter offshoot to receive the ax in the last year. Dexter creator Clyde Phillips confirmed during an interview earlier this year that the planned Trinity spin-off, which would have returned John Lithgow to a voice role while casting a younger actor to play the Trinity killer, was no longer moving forward at Paramount.

Even when Paramount announced that Dexter: Original Sin had been cancelled, the fate of Resurrection was still hanging in the balance. However, there were reports that Paramount had opened a writers’ room for a second season, and this came to fruition back in October when the studio confirmed that a second season of the show was coming.

When Does ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 Come Out?

When Paramount decided the fate of Dexter: Resurrection a few months ago, there was no information or new updates about when the second season would be released. The only thing that was confirmed is that the aforementioned writers’ room was still hard at work penning the second season. However, creator Clyde Phillips confirmed not long ago that the writers would need five months to finish the scripts before cameras rolled on the second season. If the Resurrection writer’s team can stick to this timeline, the second season will begin production in March or April, and it could potentially be released before the end of 2026.

Be sure to check out Dexter: Original Sin on Paramount+ and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
