A ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Fifth Anniversary Content Patch? Don’t Trust CDPR Denials

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the last few years since the release of Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion, it’s that you cannot trust CDPR when they say they’re done making content for the game. They have an entire Witcher trilogy coming, they’re working on Cyberpunk 2. and yet…they keep making stuff. Now, there are rumors that they’re doing something for the fifth anniversary of release on December 12, 2025. How time flies.

If this was not CDPR, I would probably not read too much into this, but now “rumors” of something happening have started swirling based on a calendar shared on social media highlighting Solomon Reed’s birthday on December 12 and So Mi Song’s on December 29. But also, of course, the anniversary of the whole game on December 10. The text reads:

SECURE COMMS CHANNEL ESTABLISHED.

STANDBY FOR INCOMING PRIORITY TRANSMISSION…

In the replies, CDPR confirms that they do this birthday calendar every month, and that they can’t post anything without “wild conspiracy theories forming around it these days.” Alright, at that point I think they doth protest too much.

The calendar just isn’t posted like usual in a “normal” tone: Here’s the one from November:

Night City’s top fixer and living legend, an equally legendary but dead (or is he?) rockerboy, and braindance virtuoso with a heart of gold — what do these three have in common? Simple — they all celebrate birthdays in November and you shouldn’t miss either one for the world! Luckily for you, we have a calendar page with all the important dates marked to help you remember. You’re welcome!”

You can see the difference. I’ve looked through a bunch of these, and they’re always like the latter rather than the former. I suspect something’s up. The game has hit too many milestones, first 35 million copies sold last month, now this five year anniversary of a truly ludicrous saga that went from disaster to being one of the best games of all time.

Now, it seems that the studio Virtuous is starting to make more and more of this Cyberpunk post-launch content as CDPR itself moves on to its larger projects. If there is something, that’s likely going to mostly be from them. It also may not be in-game content but some other announcement. I’m not exactly going to bank on a sequel trailer here. Some sort of reveal, however?

If it’s content? Manage expectations. Please. I have seen the community go way too crazy about 2.1-2.3 content drops, expecting some new expansion or something, when it’s a few cars, photo mode additions and a monorail system. It’s all cool stuff to be sure, and free, but just…measure expectations, even for a five year anniversary.

We already had one release this year, the 2.3 update that occurred in July. Previously, we had 2.1 on December 5, 2023, and 2.2 on December 10, 2024. So well, that would be half the turnaround time, but it would also be in line with these occurring the last two years on or near the anniversary of the game.

I’m leaning toward “something’s happening.” The vibes are there. Maybe we’ll hear more soon, maybe it will be a stealth drop, maybe we’re all just coping. We’ll see.
