Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis mark National Day of Remembrance

It was 36 years ago Saturday, a man walked into École Polytechnique de Montréal and began shooting.
He was specifically targeting women in an anti-feminsit rampage. In the end, 14 young women were killed in what was at the time, the worst mass shooting in Canadian History.
To mark the day, Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis (GWWIC) are hosting a gathering at Marianne’s Park (176 Gordon St.) in Guelph.
Supporters are invited to arrive at at 2 p.m. to stand in solidarity with survivors of the horrific attack and the hundreds of vicitims of femicide in the years since.
According to GWWIC, femicide numbers in Ontario are down this year. While that is worth celebrating it’s also a reminder that there is much work yet to be done in the fight to end gender based violence.
Saturday’s event will be outdoors, so attendee’s are encouraged to dress warmly. They also encouraged to wear purple to show their support for survivors.
Anyone who can’t attend is invited to watch as the event will be livestreamed on GWWIC Facebook page.
