January surprise targeted as Joe Gomez identified for Liverpool exit

Joe Gomez has started the two last two Premier League games for Liverpool.

The defender has featured at right-back, offering a solution when other players have been struggling.

Gomez was close to joining AC Milan in the summer but a transfer fell through in the last stages. Now, interest from the Italian side has returned, even when the 28-year-old is part of Liverpool’s first-team.

Calciomercato’s Daniele Longo reports Milan want to improve their backline. Whilst they’ve made contact for Sassuolo’s Jay Idzes, Gomez is also seen as a ‘desirable’ option for January. Bayern Munich’s Kim Min-Jae is another potential target.

Gomez’s Liverpool contract runs out in 2027, which may suggest a move in 2026 could be relatively easy.

Due to his increased game time, Milan’s move might get complicated. As a result, the Reds would need to bring in a player to replace the player before letting Gomez depart. Otherwise, they could be short of options at right-back and centre-back.

A move for Gomez was more feasible in the summer, when he wasn’t an important part of Arne Slot’s side. Perhaps Calciomercato – and AC Milan – do not take that context into consideration.
