Channing Tatum Almost Played Jake Sully in James Cameron’s “Avatar”

James Cameron’s groundbreaking film “Avatar” continues to dominate the box office realm, proudly holding the title of the biggest movie of all time with an impressive $2.92 billion. Although it temporarily conceded the top spot to “Avengers: Endgame,” the landmark film has firmly established itself in cinematic history. The franchise has expanded significantly since its debut, with “Avatar: The Way of Water” released in 2022 and raking in $2.34 billion, making it the third-highest-grossing film ever. Anticipation is building for the third installment, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” slated for release in December 2025.
The “Avatar” franchise has significantly shaped the career of Sam Worthington, transitioning him into a major Hollywood figure and undoubtedly enhancing his financial success. However, Worthington’s path to the role of Jake Sully was not without competition. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Cameron disclosed that three young actors were considered for the role during the film’s production at Fox. While Cameron preferred Worthington, studio executives leaned toward rising star Channing Tatum, known for his roles in the “Step-Up” series.
Cameron recounted the intense selection process, explaining, “There were three young actors that were really nowhere in their careers at the time. All three of them went on to be movie stars. I had to choose between them, and I did a series of screen tests… Sam was the one I kept going back to.” Despite Cameron’s clear inclination towards Worthington, the studio’s preference posed a significant challenge.
Interestingly, this casting session highlighted an alternative universe where Tatum could have become Jake Sully. Cameron remarked that he would have followed Worthington into battle, citing his exceptional voice and intensity during the critical audition scenes. He recalled the final speech delivered by Worthington, emphasizing the emotional resonance that secured the role for him.

In a twist of fate, Matt Damon had famously turned down the lead role as well, expressing regret at passing up such a lucrative opportunity, which allegedly included a 10% profit share. In contrast, both Worthington and Tatum were at a pivotal stage in their acting careers, and landing a role in a Cameron film was seen as a remarkable chance for both actors.
While Tatum eventually found success in various prominent roles—ranging from “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” in 2009 to the critically acclaimed “Foxcatcher”—one can’t help but ponder the trajectory of his career had he taken on the significant role in “Avatar.” Notably, he also auditioned for Marvel’s Thor, a part that went to Chris Hemsworth, further demonstrating the crossroads at which Tatum stood.
Cameron also revealed that Chris Evans, known for portraying Captain America, was part of the selection mix for Sully. Reflecting on these auditions, Cameron shared that though all the candidates were talented, it was Worthington’s unique qualities that truly set him apart.
As “Avatar: Fire and Ash” approaches its release date, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to inspire film enthusiasts and actors alike.
