Troy Deeney thinks one Newcastle player is starting to look like an absolute bargain

While Newcastle United’s 2025 summer signings have not proven to be a total hit so far, the Magpies’ record in the transfer market in recent years is largely impressive.

Ever since the PIF takeover in October 2021, Newcastle United have got a lot right when it comes to incoming transfers. The likes of Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn became standard setters, while Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali brought star power and world class potential.

Not every signing Eddie Howe makes hits the ground running, but they pretty regularly blossom into outstanding footballers. That has been the case with Lewis Hall, who has developed into a wonderful left-back after a tough start to life at St James’ Park.

He impressed yet again on Tuesday night against Tottenham Hotspur, with his display resulting in praise from former Premier League striker Troy Deeney.

Troy Deeney makes Lewis Hall prediction after exceptional Newcastle United performance

Deeney has included Lewis Hall in his Premier League team of the week for BBC Sport, admitting he was the ‘best player on the pitch’ with Tottenham Hotspur. That view was shared by Geordie Boot Boys readers, with Hall named player of the match in our post-game poll.

He now thinks the 21-year-old will be part of England’s World Cup starting XI, with Deeney praising Newcastle’s decision to invest £28million in him.

“Hands down the best player on the pitch against Spurs,” he said.

“I haven’t said this yet but if he continues in this level of form he will be the starting left-back for England at the World Cup.

“Exceptional level and it was interesting when he got brought to Newcastle from Chelsea that a lot of people questioned the fee. He’s had a few injury problems but he looks top class and like a bargain now for Eddie Howe.”

Paul Mitchell questioned Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall decision

When Newcastle initially agreed to sign Lewis Hall on loan with an obligation to buy him for £28million, it did feel like an overspend.

However, it was clear that Newcastle were investing in Hall’s potential. It was the same situation with Tino Livramento, who also arrived that summer for £32million.

The Magpies committed £60million towards two very young full-backs who could be at the club for a decade, rather than investing in experience that had a shorter shelf life.

It was smart business, but not according to former sporting director Paul Mitchell. It was reported over the summer that Mitchell thought Newcastle spent too much money on Hall and Livramento, which is laughable given their clear potential and how well they have done.
