25 years ago — 2000
In a 90-minute lunchtime check on Union Avenue, police cited 71 people Wednesday for not wearing seatbelts. The checkpoint, set up between East Parkway and Hollywood, also yielded a few citations for child-restraint and vehicle-registration violations. The seatbelt check is part of an effort to make Memphians aware of the city’s seatbelt law.
50 years ago — 1975
A major reorganization has taken place at Allied Recording Studios at 642 North Second during its recent remodeling. Nick Pesce, president of Hi Record Co., has been elected president of Allied. Lewis Willis, who was one of the founders of Allied, is vice president. Willie Mitchell, executive vice president of Hi Records, is secretary. Other partners include John Noverese and Frank Beretta, owners of Popular and Pop Tunes, and Bill Cantrell, who was one of the founders of Hi and Allied, is a producer-engineer at the studios.
75 years ago — 1950
The Rev. B.R. Lewis, pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church for the last 10 years, announced yesterday he had accepted a call to a church in Longview, Texas. He will give his farewell sermon Sunday. Soon afterward the Memphis minister, his wife and two young daughters will leave for the Pinewood Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Longview.
100 years ago — 1925
With every indication of a hurried disposition of routine business matters and with few subjects in sight that will require lengthy discussion, the Southern League magnates will go into the annual business session this morning at Russwood Park. John D. Martin, president of the league, will call the meeting to order about 10 o’clock. President Martin said last night that the meeting would probably last two days. The eight club presidents and probably some of the managers will be here.
