Brighton vs West Ham preview

West Ham lost seven of their opening nine games of the Premier League season but they have shown some steely resilience in recent weeks.

The Hammers found themselves back in the bottom three on Wednesday after relegation rivals Leeds beat Chelsea 3-1 at Elland Road. But the Londoners can only focus on their own business and they put in a whole-hearted performance a day later to earn a 1-1 draw at Manchester United.

It was more of a grind than free-flowing for the Hammers at Old Trafford, but they defended with intensity and were a little unfortunate that Casemiro’s shot deflected kindly into the path of Diogo Dalot to score the game’s opening goal.

It would have been easy for West Ham to subside after going a goal behind, but Dalot’s opener seemed to galvanise them and they snatched a hard-fought point courtesy of Soungoutou Magassa’s close-range leveller late on.

The Hammers are still searching for their first away win under Nuno Espirito Santo but it shouldn’t be far away if they continue to play with the same organisation and courage.

And they might fancy their chances of nicking a result at Brighton, who were annoyed to lose their unbeaten home record in Wednesday’s chaotic 4-3 defeat to Aston Villa.

Albion were on course for a third straight win and third place in the Premier League after opening up a two-goal lead inside 30 minutes. But they were pegged back by an Ollie Watkins double before half-time and found it impossible to wrestle back control.

Brighton are still handily placed and should be boosted by the return of a refreshed Danny Welbeck against West Ham on Sunday, but their suspect defensive work makes them a hard team to trust at short prices.

Conceding four goals to Villa was not a good look and served as a reminder of the vulnerability of a Seagulls side who have kept only two clean sheets at the Amex in 2025.

Brighton are clearly a progressive, well-coached team, but they are not consistent and the visit of West Ham could mark another bump in the road.

Wan Bissaka may increase his card count

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was among West Ham’s better players in the 1-1 draw at Manchester United and made a number of vital defensive interventions.

However, he has collected two yellow cards in his last two appearances and will be tested by Brighton’s vibrant left side.

Irons could settle for another stalemate

West Ham are still awaiting their first away win under Nuno, who has been in the post for a shade over two months.

However, they have registered three score-draws on their travels and another point at the Amex would be a good result.

Brighton vs West Ham Bet Builder

Jarrod Bowen to score at any time

Bowen has been the standout player in an ordinary West Ham team and is their best hope of scoring on the south coast.

Under 3.5 goals

West Ham have tightened up at the back under Nuno so it makes sense to anticipate a low-scoring outcome.

Yankuba Minteh to have a shot on target

Minteh has scored just once this season but he has taken 23 shots – the same as teammate Danny Welbeck – and will be a live threat to the West Ham goal.
