6 Years Later, Cillian Murphy’s Forgotten ‘John Wick’ Replacement Is Finally a Streaming Hit

Cillian Murphy just won his first Oscar recently for his performance in Oppenheimer, but a few years before he reunited with Christopher Nolan, he starred in a hit spy thriller that’s become a massive streaming sensation. In 2019, Murphy teamed up with Helen Mirren (MobLand) and Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6) in Anna, a spy film following one of the most feared government assassins who comes into her abilities quicker than most. Anna is streaming on MovieSphere by Lionsgate in America, but globally, the film has returned to the VOD top 10 in several countries, including France and Russia.
Anna was panned by critics upon release, leading to it earning a Rotten 34% from critics on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. It did find an audience with fans, though, who rated it a solid 81% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Anna also grossed $30 million at the global box office, but budget information for the film has not been made available, making it tough to predict if it turned a profit. For those without a MovieSphere subscription, Anna is available to rent or purchase on VOD platforms like Prime Video and Fandango at Home.
Anna immediately drew comparisons to Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde upon release. There’s a gun fu spy thriller nature to both films, and they also have a compelling female protagonist at the center. While there are some differences between the films, fans of one will most likely find some fun in the other. Luc Besson wrote the script for Anna and he also directed the film. Besson also famously wrote Lucy, the 2014 sci-fi thriller starring Scarlett Johansson.
When Does Cillian Murphy’s Next Movie Come Out?
Cillian Murphy’s next project on the slate will likely be the Peaky Blinders movie, Immortal Man, but Netflix has yet to announce exactly when the film will be released. It could be a perfect candidate for Netflix’s new theatrical release model, where the streamer puts movies into limited theaters two weeks ahead of its global streaming debut. Murphy is also attached to star in Blood Runs Coal, a new historical epic from John-Henry and Jez Butterworth. He’s rumored to have a role opposite Daniel Craig and Dave Bautista in the next film from Damien Chazelle, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Be sure to check out Anna on MovieSphere by Lionsgate or Prime Video, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
