Triangle schools announce delays due to potential for icy roads. Here’s the list

Some classes will be interrupted for the third school day in a row in the Triangle due to the threat of wintry weather.
Wake County Schools, Durham Public Schools and Orange County Schools will be closed Tuesday. Several school districts will operate on a two-hour delay due to expected refreezing overnight of black ice. This comes after schools were on a delay or used remote learning Friday and were closed on Monday.
“Temperatures are expected to fall rapidly this evening, falling into the teens to lower 20s Tuesday morning. Plan on slippery road conditions,” Orange County Schools said in explaining its decision to close Tuesday. “In addition, any remaining snow or moisture on area roads and sidewalks will freeze, producing hazardous travel into Tuesday morning.”

What schools are closed on Tuesday, Dec. 9?
Schools affected on Tuesday include:
Wake County Schools: All schools will be closed Tuesday for students due to the threat of black ice. Wake will use “banked time” built into the calendar, so students won’t have to make up the day.
Durham Public Schools: All schools will be closed for students and staff, the district said, due to hazardous conditions caused by black ice and below freezing temperatures Monday evening and into Tuesday morning,
All athletic events and afterschool activities have been canceled.
Orange County: Schools will be closed Tuesday for students and staff. The district is citing how conditions are worsening on secondary roads, with snow and ice continuing to fall Monday evening.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City: Schools will be on a two-hour delay on Tuesday. The district cited how they’re expecting a hard freeze overnight that could mean slick roads and sidewalks in the morning.
But Wednesday will go from being a teacher workday to a regular day of classes.
“With the amount of planned and unplanned time off lately, turning Wednesday into a regular school day is a sensible option under these circumstances to ensure that teaching and learning continue with as little disruption as possible,” the district said.
Johnston County: Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Tuesday.
Chatham County: Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Tuesday. Although Chatham County remains outside of the winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service, the district said a slight chance of black Ice in the morning still exists for the area.
“This delay should give our road conditions an opportunity to improve once the sun comes up, and will give school bus and student drivers improved visibility to help avoid any lingering issues.,” the district said.
