Reigning Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles have suffered back-to-back losses and might fail to regain the winning habit when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night Football.
The Eagles’ latest setback came via an alarming 24-15 defeat against the Chicago Bears last week, in which they averaged just 6.2 yards per play and converted just four out of 12 third downs as Jalen Hurts and the rest of the offence struggled to make anything happen.
Perhaps even more surprising was the performance of the Philadelphia defence, which gave up 281 yards on the ground and 425 in total.
It feels reminiscent of the 2023 season, when the Eagles lost five of their final six games. The rushing attack has been struggling and the play-calling is not on a par with last year, so it has been left to Hurts to carry the team – but he is not that type of quarterback.
The Chargers, on the other hand, secured an easy win in Week 13 following a bye week to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders 31-14 at the SoFi Stadium.
Defensively, the Chargers are among the best, ranking seventh in defensive expected points added (EPA), but their offensive EPA (16th of 32 teams) is distinctly average.
Quarterback Justin Herbert had surgery on a fractured left hand on Monday but he still has a chance to start on Monday evening, and his presence should allow Los Angeles to remain competitive.
The total points line has plummeted from an opening 45.5 to 41.5, which also suggests this will be a tight contest where a late field goal could settle it.
While the Chargers’ home advantage is almost non-existent, staying on the west coast does help them against a team who are low on confidence and have to contend with a long trip from Pennsylvania.
