Having already secured qualification for the last 32 thanks to their late win over PSV, Liverpool U19s went into their final league phase match essentially with a free hit.
They fielded a strong attack of Kieran Morrison, Josh Sonni-Lambie and Trent Kone-Doherty behind striker Keyrol Figueroa, while Joe Upton and Carter Pinnington played in midfield.
The defence was weaker, though, as coach Rob Page was forced to field Ollie O’Connor and Alvin Ayman at full-back despite both being midfielders by trade.
Emmanuel Airoboma partnered Lucas Clarke in defence, who was starting his first Youth League match of the season after injury.
The latter didn’t get off to a good start, unfortunately, as the referee deemed him to have committed a handball within just 40 seconds.
In reality, it was a very harsh decision, but scorer Dilan Zarate didn’t care as he slotted the spot-kick to Kornel Misciur’s bottom-right corner.
Inter, who needed a win to guarantee progression, started the better team and were causing problems for Liverpool.
They got their second 14 minutes in through a phenomenal hit from Pietro La Torre, who controlled a corner on his chest then struck the bouncing ball into the side of the net, clean as a whistle from 25 yards out.
Inter were vulnerable too, though, but Liverpool failed to take advantage, the most obvious example being when Kieran Morrison hit the post with a penalty-kick awarded following Mattia Marello’s 35th-minute handball.
With the last kick of the half, impressive winger Aymen Zouin almost got Inter’s third, but Ayman cleared off the line heroically to keep the Reds in the game.

Once more, Ayman came to Liverpool’s rescue just after the break, the makeshift left-back again forced to clear off the line.
Liverpool were playing better now and the changes to put Joe Bradshaw on the right for Figueroa, as well as swap Upton for Haydn Murray-Holme in midfield, didn’t hamper the team.
However, ultimately Inter were far more clinical than Liverpool and got their third in fortuitous fashion, as Dino Putsen’s shot hit the post before bouncing off the back of Misciur and ricocheting into the net.
There was nothing the young goalkeeper could do about that one, but Inter’s next was partly his fault. It was the Pole’s poor clearance that led to Mattia Mosconi being set up in the box to hit the hosts’ fourth.
Page had made two changes just before the goal, with 16-year-old Hungarian Erik Farkas coming on in midfield and Finn Inglethorpe replacing Sonni-Lambie up front.
With a young side on the pitch, Kevin Moressa rubbed salt into the visitors’ wounds as he struck low and hard to notch Inter’s fifth with five minutes left to play.
The 5-0 result doesn’t look good for Liverpool, especially following the under-18s’ 7-0 loss to Man United at the weekend, but this was a changed team in a dead rubber for the Reds.
The job of qualification had already been done with 10 points from their opening five games.
Liverpool’s round-of-32 fixture will be played on February 3 or 4, with the draw taking place at 2.30pm (GMT) on Friday.
