Baldur’s Gate 3 dev Larian says “There aren’t currently any plans” for a Divinity: Original Sin 3 — but a new Definitive Edition for 2 just got leaked

Ever since developer Larian Studios confirmed that it has no plans to create DLC, expansion content, or a sequel for its 2023 Game of the Year-winning D&D RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 last year, everyone who fell in love with the grand Faerûn adventure has been wondering one thing: what’s next?

It’s certainly a very good guess, especially given how popular Divinity: Original Sin 2 in particular was with RPG fans even before BG3 put Larian in the mainstream limelight. However, the studio’s publishing director Michael Douse has announced that Divinity: Original Sin 3 currently isn’t in development, and that there aren’t plans for it right now, either.

“There aren’t currently any plans for a new Divinity Original Sin 3 game but once we are ready to show what we’ve been working on we will,” he wrote to a fan begging for the hypothetical sequel on social media.

That news will no doubt disappoint RPG players out there that are hopeful Larian will make a new Divinity: Original Sin title, though it’s important to note that the developer’s next project could still be a game in the wider Divinity series.

Over the last 20+ years, Larian has made Divinity action RPGs as well as a real-time strategy (RTS) title; it could be returning to the franchise with either of these genres, or we could be getting another tabletop-style Divinity game that drops the “Original Sin’ signifier.

In any event, while Divinity: Original Sin 2 isn’t getting a sequel, a leak has revealed that it’s getting a new Definitive Edition. In fact, Douse’s aforementioned reply came in a comedic thread in which he quote-reposted the leak; the leak itself came from PlayStation Game Size, an X (Twitter) account that combs through the PlayStation database to share the size of upcoming releases, and also reveal unannounced titles or versions of games.

“Hey we weren’t meant to announce that yet,” Douse said in reply to PlayStation Game Size’s post, all-but-confirming the leak’s validity.

Though all 2018-released versions of Divinity: Original Sin 2 currently available across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PS4 are the “Definitive Edition,” this new version is reportedly a true Definitive Edition native to PS5 (and Xbox Series X|S, I assume) instead of just forward-compatible. I expect it will bump the framerate from 30 to 60 on consoles, and will feature improved or remastered visuals at the very least.

It’s unclear if this upgraded version of the game will be offered to Divinity: Original Sin 2 owners for free or if they’ll have to buy it again, though I’m sure Larian will make that clear when they announce the Definitive Edition officially.

Speaking of that, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw the Definitive Edition revealed at The Game Awards 2025 on December 11 — this Thursday. Perhaps Larian will even shadow drop it and make it available across various platforms that very night, though calling it a “shadow” drop would be a bit ironic now that light has been shone on it.

The existing version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 sells for $49.99 on Xbox, Switch, and PlayStation, and for $44.99 at GOG and Steam.
