With ‘Christmas Magic’ and ‘Winter Wonderland’ being top contenders in the UK Christmas charts last year, Laufey has already established her voice as perfect for the festive season. This year, she is living up to this reputation by releasing a new addition to her festive EP (‘A Very Laufey Holiday’) – a modern, jazz-pop take on the Christmas classic: ‘Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town’.
Alongside the track, Laufey has released a delightful official music video directed by Jennifer Kid and Junia Lin, and created by Scale Model Studios, featuring herself and her endearing ‘Mei Mei The Bunny’ (who has her own story in Laufey’s upcoming children’s novel) in model form, excitedly preparing for Christmas in a way which is simply adorable to watch.
The video shows the pair checking Santa’s list, dancing, ice-skating, making snow-angels and even flying, creating a whimsical, magical atmosphere that could have come straight out of a children’s Christmas movie; it is certainly reminiscent of classics like The Snowman.
The story would not be the same without the use of stop motion, which gives the video a feeling of nostalgia, authenticity and simplicity, which is very classy, and “very Laufey”. You can see the handmade craft and artistry which has gone into every element, from the timing of the percussion with the movement of the models to the detail in the design of each and every scenario, including a gorgeous little Christmas tree and an intricate model piano.
All of this comes together to create a captivating and wholesome Christmas gift of a music video, one which is guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone’s faces, and sets Laufey up perfectly for another successful year in the UK Christmas charts.
