Matt Smith Joins James Gunn’s Man Of Tomorrow As DCU’s Brainiac In Art Following Superman 2 Casting Reports

Man of Tomorrow will bring Brainiac to the big screen, as the iconic Superman villain will face off with David Corenswet’s Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor in the DC Universe. Following the Superman movie in 2025, DC Studios is already working on the next installment for Krypton’s last son, including casting the next foe for the franchise.

Following reports that Brainiac is set to be the central antagonist in Man of Tomorrow, and with rumors circulating that Matt Smith is one of the potential actors up for the gig, @dccommunityofbengal shared new DCU art to show what the House of the Dragon star could look like as the famous foe. Check it out below:

The Man of Tomorrow movie will be the first time Brainiac has ever been featured in a DC movie on the big screen. However, the Superman antagonist has been depicted several times in live-action, but on the small screen.

Through the live-action Superman TV shows, Smallville and Krypton, James Marsters and Blake Ritson, respectively, brought the character to life for multiple seasons. There have also been numerous animated DC properties to explore the villain, too.

Brainiac casting choice Matt Smith as the Doctor in Doctor Who

As Man of Tomorrow filming is set to begin next year, it’s possible that a casting announcement for Brainiac emerges before 2025 closes out. Other characters who have been confirmed for the 2027 installment include Lois Lane and Rick Flag Sr., with Rachel Brosnahan and Frank Grillo reprising their respective roles.

According to James Gunn, Man of Tomorrow is “as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” with the director sharing that “it’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complicated than that, but that’s a big part of it.” Gunn wanted “to create something extraordinary with the two of them.”

DC Studios has scheduled Man of Tomorrow to release on July 9, 2027.
