List of Schools Closed Tuesday as Snowstorm Hits

Winter weather advisories and storm warnings were issued across the Central and Northeastern U.S. on Monday, prompting school districts to delay or close school on Tuesday.
Why It Matters
The newly announced school closures come as many schools closed or delayed class on Monday due to the wintry conditions. More snow is expected, with meteorologists warning of up to a foot in some locations as a fresh wave of winter storm warnings and weather advisories arrived on Monday afternoon.
What To Know
Some school districts let school out early on Monday afternoon as a winter storm began, including in the St. Louis area.
In other areas, schools planned to shut down due to the poor weather. As of Tuesday morning, the following schools will be closed or on a delayed schedule on Tuesday:
- Massachusetts: The Bement School, Greenfield Center School, Mohawk Trail Regional School District, Neari School and Rowe Elementary, according to a report by WWLP.
- New Hampshire: Dozens of schools announced closings for Tuesday, WMUR Manchester reported. The list is long and includes Acworth Elementary School, Alstead Primary School, Barrington Elementary School, Campton Elementary School, Conant Middle High School, Cutler Elementary School, those in the Dover School District and Fall Mountain Regional High School, along with countless others.
- Ohio: Columbus City Schools, Hilliard City Schools, and Hocking County schools announced they’d either be closed or delayed.
- New York: Haverstraw-Stony Point School District was on a 2-hour delay and Liberty Central School District closed.
- New Jersey: Netcong Elementary announced they were operating on a 90 minute delay.
- Michigan: Bedford Public Schools, Monroe Public Schools, MCISD Ed Ctr/Trans Ctr and Triumph Academy were on a two-hour delay. Lenawee Christian and Ida Public Schools were closed for the day.
- Virginia: Two-hour delays also hit a slew of schools in Virginia, including Franklin and Albemarle County schools and Galax city schools, WSET reported.
- Pennsylvania: Bermudian Springs, Gettysburg Area and Conewago Valley school districts were operating on a two-hour delay.
- Connecticut: Over a dozen schools in Connecticut closed, according to NBC Connecticut.
NWS meteorologists warned that heavy snow and slick roads could affect the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.
In some areas, school closures likely won’t be announced until later Monday evening or early Tuesday morning. However, experts anticipate schools will be impacted in the hardest-hit areas.
In New York, the worst of the snow will accumulate from Tuesday morning to early afternoon, with snowfall rates exceeding 1 inch per hour at times, NWS meteorologist Bryan Greenblatt told Newsweek.
“Widespread school closings are expected in the #HudsonValley on Tuesday,” Washington Post meteorologist Ben Noll posted to X on Monday. “It’s December 1 — happy meteorological winter! The Hudson Valley’s first winter storm is gathering in the Midwest on Monday and will reach the region on Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service issued winter storm watches for Orange, Ulster, Sullivan and Dutchess Counties. Winter weather advisories cover Rockland and Putnam Counties. There continues to be a high chance for school closings on Tuesday.”
What People Are Saying
NWS office in Gray, Maine, in a winter storm warning: “Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility. Leave plenty of room between you and the motorist ahead of you, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Avoid sudden braking or acceleration, and be especially cautious on hills or when making turns. Make sure your car is winterized and in good working order.”
NWS, in a Monday forecast: “As the low continues to deepen over New England and the mid-level moisture interacts with the colder air north of the system, much of New England and the Mid-Atlantic will experience enhanced winter precipitation and possible gusty winds, especially inland from the coast, bringing the first impactful winter storm of the season. Although uncertainty remains with respect to specific totals, the threat for significant snow accumulations across the interior is rising, with more than 6″ possible north and west of the I-95 corridor.”
What Happens Next
Most winter storm warnings will expire by Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. More schools in the impacted areas could close or be delayed on Tuesday as the storm develops, and communities should check their school calendar.
