AirAsia announces new international route for 2026 with direct flights from Melbourne to Bali

AirAsia has announced a new international route operated by Indonesia AirAsia for 2026, connecting Melbourne to Bali with tickets from $199 and offering Aussies more choice when flying to one of their favourite destinations.

The route operates between Melbourne Airport (MEL) and Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), both major hubs with extensive domestic and international connectivity. This service offers more options for Australian travellers looking to explore Indonesia’s top destinations via Denpasar, including Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok, and Labuan Bajo, the entry point to Komodo National Park.

Additional connectivity options are available beyond Indonesia, with AirAsia’s convenient Fly-Thru service. Passengers from Melbourne can connect seamlessly to major destinations across the AirAsia network such as Phuket, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, without the need to collect baggage during transit.

“Bali remains a top destination for many Australians, captivating the hearts of travellers young and old,” AirAsia acting CEO Captain Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman said.

“This strategic launch strengthens Indonesia AirAsia’s presence in Australia and opens a key gateway connecting Southeast Asia to southern Australia. The daily Melbourne–Denpasar route reflects our goal to provide greater, more affordable and flexible access between Indonesia and Australia. This initiative also strengthens social and economic ties, encourages business collaboration, and gives travellers more opportunities to experience the unique culture of both destinations.”

“The introduction of direct flights between Melbourne and Denpasar is a tangible step in enhancing the strategic partnership between Australia and Indonesia,” Republic of Indoneasia in Melbourne consul-general Yohannes Jatmiko Heru Prasetyo said.

“Beyond boosting tourism flows, this improved connectivity will benefit cooperation in economic, education, and cultural sectors, as well as encourage collaboration between communities in both countries. With this increased access, the relationship between Indonesia and Australia will continue to grow and deliver mutual benefits.”

According to Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Australia continues to be the largest source of foreign visitors to Bali. Between January and July 2025, Bali recorded more than 3.9 million direct international arrivals, a 12 per cent increase year-on-year and of this, 23 per cent were from Australia.

Bali draws travellers in with its tropical beaches, rich cultural heritage, arts, and warm hospitality. Meanwhile, Melbourne is renowned for its vibrant arts scene, culinary diversity, architectural charm, and proximity to iconic Victorian attractions such as the Great Ocean Road and Yarra Valley.

Melbourne becomes Indonesia AirAsia’s fourth destination in Australia, after Perth, Darwin, and Adelaide.
