Dr. Derek Haley Appointed New Director of CCSAW at University of Guelph

The Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare (CCSAW) at the University of Guelph has officially announced the appointment of Dr. Derek Haley as its new director, a position he will assume on November 1, 2025. This decision marks a significant step for the Centre, which is recognized as one of the largest and most comprehensive animal welfare organizations globally.

Dr. Haley, currently a faculty member in the Department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College, has a wealth of experience in livestock behavior and welfare. He has been actively involved with CCSAW for many years, serving as both a faculty member and a member of the Centre’s steering committee. His contributions have been pivotal in shaping the strategic direction of CCSAW and mentoring students engaged in animal welfare research. In his new role, Dr. Haley expresses his eagerness to elevate the Centre’s profile further.

“Dr. Haley has long been a thoughtful and respected voice in the field of animal welfare,” commented Dr. Jeffrey Wichtel, Dean of the Ontario Veterinary College. “His appointment as director of CCSAW reflects not only his deep expertise in animal behavior and livestock systems but also his commitment to collaborative, evidence-based approaches that improve the lives of animals.”

Dr. Haley’s research primarily centers on beef and dairy cattle, addressing critical issues such as the effects of long-distance transportation, weaning stress, and the welfare of culled dairy cows. His previous experience includes serving as a provincial livestock welfare specialist with Alberta Agriculture, where he spearheaded animal welfare initiatives across multiple provinces. Being fluent in French, Dr. Haley has formed extensive collaborations with producers, veterinarians, and policymakers across Canada.

Since its establishment over 35 years ago, CCSAW has played a crucial role in enhancing animal welfare through research, teaching, and outreach. The Centre fosters a collaborative environment, bringing together faculty and students from various disciplines, which is vital for advancing knowledge and practices that improve the lives of animals.

“Interest in how animals are cared for—and the impact of that care—is growing rapidly, encompassing farm animals, zoo animals, companion pets, and wildlife,” Dr. Haley noted. “I’m honored to lead the Centre, which unites researchers and academics with expertise in animal welfare, along with dedicated individuals committed to improving the lives of animals.”

Dr. Haley’s appointment not only builds on CCSAW’s existing reputation for international leadership in animal welfare science but also reinforces its commitment to innovative interdisciplinary research and world-class education for students.

Dr. Wichtel expressed confidence in Dr. Haley’s leadership, stating, “I’m confident that under Dr. Haley’s leadership, CCSAW will continue to grow its impact across research, education, and policy.”

The CCSAW community also extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Georgia Mason for her dedicated service and contributions to the Centre’s growth. Dr. Mason, a professor in the College of Biological Science’s Department of Integrative Biology, will remain with CCSAW as a core faculty member, ensuring continuity in the Centre’s mission to enhance animal welfare.
