What was meant to be a memorable crossover moment at Jacob Collier’s Mumbai concert has instead sparked a sharp online debate. Singer Anuv Jain’s guest appearance at the show drew mixed reactions, with composer-singer Vishal Dadlani openly calling the performance “embarrassing.”
Jacob Collier performed in Mumbai on November 30 at the Nesco Center in Goregaon East as part of his Djesse Vol. 4 World Tour. During the concert, Anuv Jain joined him on stage to sing Baarishen. Soon after, clips from the performance began circulating on Instagram, with several social media users criticising Jain’s singing for sounding flat and out of tune.
The comments on the viral video were blunt. One user wrote, “The only mistake was thinking this pairing made sense.” Another comment read, “imperfect pitch meets perfect pitch,” while a third said, “I cannot wrap my head around this!”
Vishal Dadlani also weighed in on the discussion and did not hold back. Reacting in the comments section, he wrote, “Is it necessary to keep doing embarrassing s***e like this? Is it part of some corporate mandate somewhere?”
This is not the first time Vishal has called out live performances by Indian singers. In January this year, he had shared a strong critique on Instagram Stories, without naming anyone. He wrote, “I’m really sorry, but when you put a basic-to-bad singer in front of a large crowd on a large stage, all you’re doing is showing more people that the individual can’t really sing, and that sadly, systems within labels in India aren’t geared towards really promoting the best we have. I’ve just seen some clips, and my gosh… How embarrassing! For the country, the artiste, the public, as well as ‘the scene.’”
Vishal began his music journey as the lead vocalist of electronic rock band Pentagram, a well-known name in India’s independent music space. He later found mainstream success as one half of composer duo Vishal-Shekhar, known for hit film albums like Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express, Befikre and War.
