Rowan Atkinson shares an interesting anecdote regarding the naming of the TV sitcom, Mr. Bean

For the ’90s kids, Mr. Bean is a bag full of happiness and nostalgia. The TV sitcom was created by actor, Rowan Atkinson and British screenwriter, Richard Curtis. In a recent conversation with Scott Mills on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show, Rowan shared an interesting anecdote surrounding the naming of the TV sitcom, Mr. Bean. The Man vs Baby actor shared that when they developed ‘Mr. Bean’ on stage, it was just a character with no name. But when they decided to take it on TV, the duo decided to name the show after the character. Initially, they addressed the character as ‘Mr. White’, but then suddenly they thought of vegetables’ name and came up with the word, ‘Bean’. He was quoted as saying:

“He was a character, but he never had a name. Then we were going to put him on TV. We thought we should call the show after the character. He was called Mr White for a while, an extremely bland name, but then we did think of vegetables, for some reason, vegetables came into the discussion. There was Mr Cauliflower, Mr Courgette, we definitely went through a few, then Bean just struck us as a short, sharp, single syllable with a B in it. Generally speaking, words beginning with B are slightly funnier than words that aren’t in my opinion.”

Rowan Atkinson shares that he hates ‘Mr. Bean’ as a person

During the London screening of the Netflix show, Man vs Baby, Rowan shared that he hates ‘Mr. Bean’, as a person and would never invite him for dinner. He then went on to say that he likes ‘Mr. Bean’ as a character. He then explained what might be the reason behind liking that character. He shared that sort of childish selfishness, he too had when he was just 10 years old. He was quoted as saying:

“I dislike Mr Bean as a person; I certainly would never like to have dinner with him. But at the same time, I like him as a character, because he is possibly a bit like I was at age 10 – that sort of childish sort of selfishness and working things out in a slightly eccentric way. But at the same time, I wouldn’t want him in my house.”

Rowan Atkinson calls his character, ‘Travis Bingley’, one of the ‘nicest people’ he played on-screen

During the same event, Rowan highlighted that among all the characters he played on-screen, ‘Travis Bingley’ is one of the ‘nicest people’. He called his famous character, ‘Mr Bean’, selfish, ‘self-serving’ and an ‘anarchic’ child. He then called the character, ‘Blackadder’, negative. He expressed that he liked playing a nice guy like ‘Travis’ on-screen. He was quoted as saying:

“Trevor Bingley, in his basic form, is arguably one of the nicest people I’ve ever played. Because I think most people I’ve played are sort of deeply unpleasant, really, you know, Mr Bean is a selfish, self-serving, anarchic child. Blackadder is a sort of sarcastic and sardonic, and basically negative force, I think. Even Johnny English is a sort of vain, sort of charmless. I think, actually, Trevor has turned out to be one of my more pleasant, amenable creations. I quite like playing the nice guy, which I haven’t done very often.”
