Left 4 Dead dev Mike Booth has teamed up with JJ Abrams to make another four-player shooter, with purple aliens this time

Left 4 Dead creator Mike Booth’s passion for that special number between three and five continues with 4:Loop, a new co-op sci-fi shooter he’s working on in collaboration with Bad Robot Games, the studio founded by nu-Star Trek and nu-Star Wars director JJ Abrams. PlayStation are publishing this one. Strap as many shotguns to your shoulder blades as possible and watch the trailer.

Trailer breakdown: Earth has been invaded! Everybody is purple and frozen and gooey now. A bunch of jarheads with guns are out to set things right. They will need to unbreak the world using the very machine that broke it, apparently. Usefully, they can be 3D printed anew everytime they die. I think this is the aforesaid world-breaking, world-unbreaking machine. And that’s 4:Loop. “Get out there and fail to save the world,” notes Trailer Man in closing.

It’s coming to Steam… at some stage. The official site calls it “a tactical, four-player co-op shooter crafted for endless replayability and infinite ways to build the ultimate team.” Honestly, the premise and alien opposition seem rather unadventurous. I hope this is good. I’m not sure my lingering enthusiasm for Left 4 Dead is enough to get me through another Back 4 Blood-grade disappointment. Also, PlayStation aren’t exactly picking winners with their multiplayer shooters at present.
