USC is looking into the possibility of playing its home football games at SoFi Stadium in 2028, according to a source briefed on the matter.
The one-season move would be necessary because of a conflict with the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in Los Angeles. The opening and closing ceremonies, as well as track and field events, will be held that summer at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the longtime home of the Trojans. The Los Angeles Times first reported the news.
The matter is still in the review process, and nothing has been finalized, according to the source.
A temporary track will be installed over the Coliseum field for the Olympics. USC is awaiting the findings of a feasibility report from the Coliseum and LA28, the organization tasked with planning the Olympics. If the Coliseum playing field isn’t damaged and the temporary track can be removed in time, there’s still a chance USC could play in the Coliseum in 2028.
But if that does not happen, USC is likely to play its 2028 home games at SoFi Stadium. The school will make its decision once it reviews the results of the feasibility report.
The Olympics will begin on July 14, 2028, and run through July 30, but the Paralympics will not conclude until Aug. 27, shortly before the start of the football season.
SoFi is home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers of the NFL, and UCLA may be playing there soon, which means four teams could be playing home games under one roof that season.
The Coliseum, which hosted the summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984, will be the first venue to host three Olympic Games.
