Jacob Bard, 48, was arrested and charged with murder and assault after police said he killed one student and injured another at Kentucky State University on Tuesday.
Bard’s attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.
“Alright, I accept the plea of not guilty,” the judge said.
Victim identified as 19-year-old student
Bard’s arrest citation said he got into a fight before killing 19-year-old De’Jon Darrell Fox Jr. and injuring another student.
His attorney, Mark Hall of Louisville, argued there is more to the story than the arrest citation suggests.
“I understand the serious nature of the allegations, however I think that there is significant pretenses that Mr. Bard has,” Hall said.

A GoFundMe has been started to raise money for De’Jon Fox’s family.
Defense requests lower bond
When asked about bond, Hall said Bard is not a flight risk and a lesser bond would benefit his wife and three children.
“We’re asking a bond below twenty-five or fifty thousand dollars,” Hall said.
The judge ordered a $1 million cash bond. Bard remains behind bars.
Bard’s preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 16 at 1 p.m.
