Jacob Lee Bard, the man charged in connection to the deadly shooting at Kentucky State University, entered a not guilty plea during an arraignment hearing Dec. 11.

Bard, 48, of Evansville, Indiana, is facing murder and assault charges. He is being held at the Franklin County Regional Jail with a $1 million cash bond.

According to an arrest citation, Bard was involved in “a physical altercation” on campus, during which he “produced a handgun and shot two other individuals.” He is the father of two baseball players at the university, though it is still unclear why he visited the campus Dec. 9.

Frankfort Police responded to a report of a shooting at KSU around 3:10 p.m. Dec. 9. When officers arrived, KSU Campus Police already had a suspect in custody, later identified as Bard.

Frankfort Police Assistant Chief Scott Tracy said two students were shot and were taken to an area hospital for treatment, where one later died.

In a Dec. 10 news release, the Franklin County Coroner’s Office identified De’Jon Darrell Fox, Jr., 19, of Indianapolis, as the student who died. Coroner William Harrod said Fox was pronounced dead at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center at 4:33 p.m. Dec. 9.

The second student, who has not yet been identified, remains in critical condition.
