Two of boxing’s brightest stars will clash inside Madison Square Garden on January 31, 2026 when Teofimo Lopez defends the WBO and The Ring super lightweight titles against Shakur Stevenson.
“The World’s Most Famous Arena” hosts the latest Ring Magazine-produced event. Competing multiple times in the MSG Theater, it’s the first headliner in the main arena for both men.
Lopez (22-1) has accomplished so much at a young age. The 28-year-old dethroned Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 to become the unified lightweight champion. Losing the belts against George Kambosos Jr., he moved up to 140 and has won six straight. He beat Josh Taylor for the WBO and Ring super lightweight belts.
“The Takeover” recently headlined a card in Times Square. Now, the Brooklyn-born fighter looks to prove he’s the face of boxing against his former stablemate inside New York’s historic venue.

“All of the things that I learned at junior welterweight/super lightweight. Everything that I learned has brought me to this moment here and now,” Lopez said. “Every fighter that I faced, in this beautiful weight class, all the things that I learned from every fighter that I faced, to now, will be on display against Shakur Stevenson.
A multi-division champion, Stevenson (24-0) beat Edwin De Los Santos in 2023 for the WBC title. The 28-year-old is known for his defense, but he impressed many who have criticized his style by engaging in a slugfest against William Zepeda in July.
The Olympic silver medalist from Newark has headlined shows in his home state and in a New York tennis arena. Now, he’s ready to shut Lopez up in his first MSG headliner.
“I just don’t think he realizes how good I am. I think come fight night, he’s going to realize that I’m gonna take it to another level that he has never seen before,” Stevenson said. “So, if he’s expecting the [Vasiliy] Lomachenko, or the Josh Taylor fight to happen, it won’t be that type of fight.”
