Conor McGregor finally ties the knot with long-term partner Dee Devlin on Friday after experiencing delays in settling on a venue. The UFC fighter popped the question to his other half back in 2020.
Originally, McGregor insisted he needed some breathing space to “chill” following his son’s christening in 2017, pointing to his youth as a reason for postponing nuptials. Chatting to RTE, the Dubliner explained: “We just dropped a bloody bomb on a christening for the young boy. Let me chill for a minute, give me time. I’m still only 29.”
After the engagement was made official, the couple faced the challenge of selecting their wedding destination. McGregor revealed to the Irish Mirror that whilst he’d favour tying the knot in Dublin, both parties needed to reach an agreement.
He explained: “My lady is my long-time lady. We are set to get married soon, we are just trying to find a location. I am ready to go; we are just trying to get a location. Is it at home? I’d like for it to be at home. We are deciding on a location. Hopefully, we get the marriage done, and that is what I’m looking forward to. These are the decisions we have.
“I go between do we want an extreme and extravagant. It will be extravagant and I will spare no cost for sure for my lady and my family but is it invite everyone or is it private, these are the things we are trying to figure out.
“We are private people but we wouldn’t like to do it and think we should have done it a bit bigger. So we are in decision mode at moment, but let’s see, things are good. But that’s my lady all the way, the highs or lows before all of this.”
Dee reportedly had her heart set on tying the knot in the iconic Sistine Chapel, but the Vatican doesn’t allow wedding ceremonies there, reports the Mirror. A close source revealed: “Conor and Dee want to get married before Christmas and are planning a wedding at the Vatican in Rome. They are both staunch Catholics and it is their dream to wed there.
“They ideally would like to marry in the Sistine Chapel but it is not allowed, so they may have to settle for the Cappella del Caro which can accommodate 100 people beside St Peter’s Basilica. It is all hush hush at the moment, but December 12 is the date mentioned, so we will have to wait and see.”
Now, the 37-year-old is finally set to say ‘I do’ to Dee, with the intimate ceremony taking place in the Chiesa di Santo Stefano Degli Abissini, just behind the Basilica of St Peter.
Vatican insiders told the Irish Independent that the Church of St Stephen of the Abyssinians was the official venue for the rare occasion. Weddings in the Vatican are unusual and are reserved for very specific reasons, requiring special arrangements with authorities.
Nevertheless, worries were raised about the nuptials due to McGregor’s numerous controversies. Last year, McGregor was found civilly liable for the rape of Nikita Hand in a Dublin hotel room.
The mixed martial arts fighter refuted the allegation, maintaining that he engaged in consensual relations with Nikita Hand. Ms Hand received €250,000 in compensation, whilst McGregor was also instructed to cover approximately €1.3 million in legal expenses.
This month, the Supreme Court dismissed the Dubliner’s challenge to the civil verdict, determining that he received a fair trial and confirming he would be unable to lodge any further appeals. Dee remained loyal to McGregor during the proceedings and took to social media to express her confidence in her now-spouse.
She posted: “My man and I have created a beautiful life together. I love him I trust him and I BELIEVE HIM!
“Our four beautiful children whose smiling faces and happy hearts are testimony to the man he is and who we are! No one is entitled to comment on our relationship- we trust one another and love one another. Nothing or nobody will change that. Our family stands strong!”.
The couple initially crossed paths in 2008 at a nightclub where Dee was employed, and they have four children together – sons Conor Jack McGregor Jr, Rian, and Mack, plus daughter Croia.
