Meet Newsom’s trans godson Nats Getty, the clothing designer heir to a billionaire’s fortune

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ community — and that includes his trans godson, Nats Getty.
Newsom mentioned Getty, a designer, model and activist, as evidence of his empathy for the trans community even as he outraged many progressives for labeling trans participation in women’s sports “unfair.” Getty, 33, publicly came out as transgender in 2021 and uses he/him pronouns.

“I have a trans godson — there’s no governor that’s signed more pro-trans legislation than and no one has been a stronger advocate for the LGBT community,” Newsom said on the Ezra Klein podcast in an episode published Wednesday.
Nats Getty, a scion of the famed oil clan that bankrolled Newsom’s early political career, is the the great-grandchild of tycoon J. Paul Getty. His mother is Ariadne Getty, daughter of John Paul Getty and niece of Gordon Getty.

Nats’ brother is August Getty, designer and founder of the fashion brand August Getty Atelier.
Nats, 33, is also a cousin of Ivy Getty, who married and later divorced Tobias Engel in a star-studded wedding at San Francisco City Hall in 2020.
Nats Getty is creative director and founder of Strike Oil, a Los Angeles-based streetwear brand. On Instagram, he often shares photos of his designs alongside snaps of partying with pals in glamorous locales such as Paris and Lake Como.

The oil heir and designer was married to the beauty YouTuber Gigi Gorgeous, aka Giselle Loren Lazzarato, in 2019 in an extravagant beachfront wedding in Montecito. According to People, Lazzarato donned a silk August Getty gown while Getty wore a chic jumpsuit. Newsom delivered a toast at their wedding, per Vanity Fair. The pair filed for divorce in July.

In 2021, Getty publicly came out as trans in an emotional Instagram post and shared his journey undergoing a physical gender transition, including top surgery.
“I have spent my entire life not in sync with the body I was born with and confined by an outwardly appearance that did not match my mind or soul,” Getty wrote in the post. “It wasn’t until recently that I was even comfortable admitting this to myself, once I was able to look inwards and truly reflect on my authentic self.”

Newsom, who is believed to be angling for a presidential bid, has long been considered a champion of LGBT issues.
As San Francisco mayor, Newsom defied state law to issue thousands of marriage licenses to same-sex couples, sparking national controversy but establishing him as an ally of the LGBT community.
More recently, however, he angered activists by calling trans participation in women’s sports “unfair” on a podcast with the deceased conservative pundit Charlie Kirk.
Newsom’s office and Getty have been contacted for comment.
