VILLANOVA, Pa. — A quartet of Wildcats landed on this year’s PhillySIDA Academic All-Area squad as Temi Ajirotutu, Luke Colella, Shane Hartzell and Pat McQuaide earned mention on the list released Friday.
It’s the 18th straight year that multiple ‘Cats have received the honor and keeps VU’s streak alive of at least one football selection in every year since the awards started in 2005, with Villanova tying for second this season for most selections from a single school.
The VU honorees are highlighted by Hartzell, who was a repeat choice from last year’s list as well as a unanimous selection. The First Team All-CAA linebacker and Villanova’s leader in tackles, TFLs, sacks and hurries was one of just four unanimous picks this year. The Perkasie native holds a 3.89 in his graduate program and was named a Buck Buchanan award finalist and a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy in his senior year of eligibility.
Ajirotutu makes his first appearance on the PhillySIDA honorees after being named First Team All-CAA, starting all 13 games at left guard as one of two team captains. The graduate student from Queens maintains a 3.54 in his counseling master’s degree and recently played in his 50th career game as a Wildcat.
Colella earned the accolade during his first year on the Main Line after transferring in from Princeton, being named Second Team All-CAA as Villanova’s leading receiver. The western PA product is nearing 1,000 yards as a Wildcat with a team-best 68 receptions in addition to carrying a 3.67 grade point average at VU.
McQuaide rounded out this year’s Villanova selections after an All-CAA Honorable Mention campaign where he’s thrown for over 2,700 yards and 23 touchdowns after transferring in from Nicholls. The graduate quarterback has a 3.80 GPA in his education master’s, and in just one season he ranks in the program’s top 20 for almost every passing category.
Ajirotutu, Colella, Hartzell, McQuaide and the Wildcats will take part in an NCAA quarterfinal matchup on Saturday afternoon, squaring off with Tarleton State at 12:00 p.m. Eastern from Stephenville, Texas.
