The Federal Treasurer’s pre-Christmas gift to consumers of new controls to prevent alleged price gouging by Coles and Woolworths is another case of regulatory overkill that will do absolutely nothing to help reduce weekly grocery bills.
The weekend announcement gave the government a free kick in the media and limited critical responses but it is nothing more than a political distraction to shift the blame for the high cost of living.
