Winter storm watches issued in NY: See latest snow projections

Snowiest cities in America: Western New York reigns

Explore why Western New York cities like Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo are among the snowiest in America, thanks to the powerful lake-effect snow phenomenon.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Wayne and northern Cayuga counties from late Saturday night through Monday morning, warning of potentially heavy lake-effect snow. A previous Lake Effect Snow Warning for the area has been cancelled.

Forecasters say 7 inches or more of snow are possible in the most persistent bands, with the greatest accumulations expected in far eastern Wayne County and northern Cayuga County. Travel may become difficult at times due to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.

The Weather Service cautions that narrow, intense snow bands could cause rapidly changing road conditions and localized travel problems.

Winter storm watch also in effect for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Southern Erie counties

A separate Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday morning through late Sunday night for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and southern Erie counties.

Those areas could also see 7 inches or more of lake-effect snow, especially along higher terrain including the Chautauqua Ridge and Boston Hills. Wind gusts up to 35 mph may create blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility and making travel hazardous.
