Leeds United escaped conceding a soft penalty in their Premier League clash against Brentford on Sunday after the video assistant referee (VAR) overturned the on-field decision.

Following a strong start by Daniel Farke’s men at the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford came into the game and thought they had the chance to go ahead when referee John Brooks pointed to the spot in the 35th minute.

Dango Ouattara was brought down inside the penalty area by Gabriel Gudmundsson following a cross from the left. However, VAR checked the incident, and after the actual challenge was passed, the decision was overturned with the Bees forward being deemed offside.

Following the decision, the Premier League Match Centre provided clarity on why the decision was overturned. “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of penalty to Brentford,” they wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“Referee announcement: “After review, Brentford number 19, who was fouled, is in an offside position. Therefore, the final decision is an indirect free-kick.”

Replays showed that Ouattara was slightly offside when the ball came in. It was the last key incident from the first half that lacked quality in the capital.

Leeds came into the clash on the back of a good draw against Liverpool and win over Chelsea. Farke’s men started the brightest and Noah Okafor had the game’s most significant opportunity, but his effort was saved.

Early in the second half, Leeds had a penalty shout themselves when Dominic Calvert-Lewis went down. The striker was holding the ball up inside the area and backed into Nathan Collins before going down.

However, Brooks waved away the claim and VAR decided to stick with the decision following a brief check. VAR also checked a claim of handball moments later, which was also dismissed.
