Patriots lose key defender as Bills try to mount comeback

FOXBOROUGH — As Josh Allen erased a second half deficit, the Bills quarterback did it against a backup Patriots cornerback.
Veteran defensive back Carlton Davis left Sunday’s game in the third quarter with a groin injury before returning in the fourth. Davis went to the blue injury tent, then the locker room before getting back on the field. Second-year corner Charles Woods replaced Davis in the secondary during his absence.
In a game where they were home underdogs at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots ran out to a 24-7 first half lead. They have a chance to win the AFC East with a victory, but Mike Vrabel said he didn’t think Patriots-Bills had been much of a rivalry lately.
“I know that they’ve won the division five years in a row,” Vrabel said. “I don’t think there was really much of a rivalry for those years. Maybe not, I don’t know. I wasn’t paying any attention to it. I’m just focused on a very good football team, that is used to winning. They’re determined, they’re resilient and we’ll have to be at our best.”
