Spotify is currently down for many users, with the music streaming service experiencing playback issues and displaying error messages.

Problems began around 1.51pm GMT, when a surge of reports on Downdetector indicated thousands of users encountering issues with the mobile app. So far, almost 10,000 users in the UK have reported problems.

According to Downdetector, 81% of reports relate to the Spotify app, 11% to the website, and 8% to server connection issues. The Spotify Status X account has confirmed: “We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out!”

The outage appears to be server-related, as many users report being unable to search for or stream songs in the app, while offline music and audiobooks continue to play.

Most reports concern the mobile app, though some users say the desktop app is also affected. When accessing the app, users are greeted with three loading dots on both the home and search screens.

Spotify users have taken to X to vent their frustrations over the outage. One said songs start but cut out within 10 seconds, adding: “I’m paying too much for this not to work.”

Another wrote, “Can you hurry up, I am sitting here alone with my thoughts,” while one posted a GIF of Kermit the Frog holding a machine gun with the caption: “you better figure it out quick.”

Others complained the outage interrupted their “jamming session” or workouts, with one user exclaiming, “Hurry, I’m in the gym right now, wtf.”

It is important to note that the number of affected users may differ from the reported figures, as Downdetector relies on user-submitted reports.

Downdetector is an online platform that allows users to report problems with popular services such as X, Instagram, Facebook and more.

It only registers an incident when the number of reports exceeds the typical volume for that time of day. The site monitors disruptions to a variety of key services, including social media platforms, banks, internet providers and web hosting services.

The issue comes after a run of major outages in recent weeks, including problems at Cloudflare that took down Spotify among other major apps such as ChatGPT. This time, the problems appear to be localised to Spotify, with other major platforms seemingly unaffected.

Spotify has not provided a full explanation for the outage, and it remains unclear when normal service will resume.
