Sheffield Wednesday ended a run of four straight defeats with an admirable draw at Watford in midweek but it’s likely to be a familiar tale of woe for the Owls on Monday when Derby head to Hillsborough.
Wednesday look doomed this season with crippling points deductions meaning they are already planning for life next season in League One. Understandably, amid their off-field troubles, they have struggled in the Championship and sit on a grim -9 points after 19 games.
John Eustace’s Derby have failed to win any of their last three games but up against the team who are cast adrift at the bottom, the visitors should prevail.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Derby preview
Derby are in need of a victory having lost to Middlesbrough and Leicester in recent weeks before they at least stopped the rot with a 1-1 home draw on Wednesday against Millwall. The Rams’ form has been streaky this term but they look well capable of emerging from their trip to South Yorkshire with all three points.
Derby were being talked up as dark-horse promotion contenders when they racked up five straight wins at the end of October and into November – a run of results that included eye-catching wins at Sheffield United and Blackburn. However, they have struggled to sustain that form, although a victory at Hillsborough on Monday would serve as a positive launchpad going into the busy month ahead, with the Rams facing Birmingham, Leicester and Middlesbrough, among others, in the next few weeks.
Agyemang should be in the thick of the action
Derby are set to be without their ten-goal leading scorer Carlton Morris until February, so in his absence Eustace will again likely to turn to Patrick Agyemang up front. The United States international has three goals this season but he has been heavily involved in the final third of late, without always getting his rewards.
The 25-year-old had five shots in the recent win over Swansea, while in the subsequent games, Agyemang had a total of three shots combined against Middlesbrough and Leicester. However, those two outings came in games where the Rams were largely up against it and it’s interesting to note the forward was back racking up the shots – five – in the midweek draw against Millwall, which was a much more even contest.
Against bottom-of-the-table Wednesday, he should enjoy plenty of service again and it would be no surprise to see the Derby man have four shots or more on Monday.
Wednesday won’t go down without a fight
Despite their predicament, there have been occasional positive moments from Wednesday this season. As well as the draw with Watford most recently, the Owls twice led in their previous home game against Preston only to lose 3-2 late on and they have also picked up creditable draws with West Brom, Norwich, Birmingham and QPR this season.
The fact that two of those draws came at home suggests Wednesday will at least stay competitive on Monday and they can score in defeat. Pedersen’s side have got on the scoresheet on four of their last six games and in three of their last four at Hillsborough, while the Rams have not kept a clean sheet in the championship since October 25 in a 1-0 home win over QPR – a run of eight matches.

Both teams to score
Both teams have netted in each of Derby’s last eight matches, while both teams have scored in Wednesday’s last two outings.
Dion Sanderson to receive a card
Derby defender Dion Sanderson has already served one suspension this season for picking up five yellow cards. He is well into double figures (16) for the amount of fouls he has given away and he could be in trouble with the officials again on Monday.
Over 2.5 goals
There seems a strong chance of at least three goals being scored at Hillsborough, considering seven of Derby’s last eight games have featured two or more goals, while the same can be said for three of Wednesday’s last five. Furthermore, the last time these two met, it finished 4-2 to the Owls in January.
