A title would be the first for either program, though the Huskies have more recent experience on the College Cup stage, having made it to the national title game in 2021, when they fell to Clemson. The College Cup appearance is the Wolfpack’s first since 1990.

The national title would be the first for both programs.

NC State has won each of its past two NCAA tournament games by one goal, including a 2-1 victory in the national semifinals against Saint Louis in which it raced out to a 2-0 lead. The first of those goals came from Donavan Phillip, who is tied for the Division I lead with 18 goals this season. The Wolfpack will be playing Monday’s game only about five miles from the school’s campus in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Washington, meanwhile, has knocked out four of the tournament’s 16 national seeds during its run to the title game, including No. 4 Maryland and No. 5 SMU. Most recently, it knocked off No. 16 Furman 3-1 in the semifinals.

Craig Meyer, USA TODAY Sports: NC State 2, Washington 1

The Wolfpack have been among the most balanced teams in the country all season, with a stout defense and one of the best goal-scorers in the country. That will be enough to get them by the Huskies in what should be a hard-fought, closely contested match.
