First Presidency updates name of San José California Temple

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Monday that the San Jose California Temple — the church’s 11th announced temple in California — will now be known as the Sunnyvale California Temple.

This updated name reflects the temple’s planned location on a 4.73-acre lot in Sunnyvale, California — a suburb of San José.

Accompanying the temple, to be located at 771 W. Fremont Ave. in Sunnyvale, will be a church distribution center that will help make Latter-day Saint worship and gospel study resources more accessible to members in the area.

The single-story temple is planned to cover 30,000 square feet, approximately. And as the 11th of 12 temples in California that are currently announced, under construction, undergoing renovation, or in planning and design stages, the Sunnyvale California Temple will help serve the nearly 730,000 Latter-day Saints that reside in the state.

Of California’s 12 temples, seven are in operation, one is closed for renovations, two are under construction, and two others — including the Sunnyvale temple — are in planning and design stages.
