What To Watch This Weekend: New Shows And Movies To Stream On Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV And More

What to watch this weekend.

Daring adventures in far-off lands. Diabolical murder mysteries that only the best detective can solve. Race cars and pop stars. The weekend is upon us and with it, a bunch of new TV shows and movies to watch on all the streaming services we subscribe to these days.
One of the big streaming events of the year actually took place last night when The Game Awards aired not only on YouTube and Twitch, but also on Amazon Prime Video. Millions tuned in for the awards as well as a bevy of new game announcements. One of my top picks for 2025 won Game Of The Year.
News around Netflix’s $82.7 billion bid for Warner Bros. continues to swirl, with Paramount+ now joining the fray and going direct to shareholders with a $108 billion hostile takeover attempt. I’m not sure which of the two is the lesser evil, but I wrote a long piece about all the reasons I think Netflix is a bad deal. Maybe when it comes to evil, we should take notes from Geralt of Rivia: “Evil is evil. Greater, lesser, middling…makes no difference.”
As always, I’ve scoured the internet for all the best TV shows and movies to watch this weekend. Some of the heavy hitters this month won’t release until next week or later, with Fallout Season 2 dropping on Prime Video on the 17th and Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 2 landing on Netflix on Christmas. If you’re looking for other mind-bending shows to scratch that Stranger Things itch, I have you covered.
Let me know if I’ve missed anything and I’ll add it in an update. Send me any tips you have on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook.
Be sure to also check out last weekend’s streaming guide right here.
New TV Shows To Watch This Weekend
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft — Season 2 (Netflix)
I’ve heard a lot of good things about the animated Tomb Raider series on Netflix, with the talented Hayley Atwell as Lara Croft. Frankly, I think Atwell would make a great live-action Lara. Two new Tomb Raider games were also announced at The Game Awards on Thursday, so lots and lots of tomb-raiding in our collective future.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians — Season 2 (Disney+)
The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted this week on Disney+ returning after about a year (Season 1 ended in December of 2024). The series, based on the popular fantasy novels by Rick Riordan, is getting stellar reviews from both critics (100% on RT) and audiences (90%) and sounds like a step forward from Season 1. A fun show to watch with the whole family, for sure.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Disney+)
Swiftees (I wish they were called Swifters, like Swiffers) will be pleased to learn that Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” is landing this weekend. It’s a bit confusing, but The Final Show drops along with the first couple episodes of the six-part docuseries today, and then more episodes drop two at a time each week until the 26th of December.
New Movies To Watch This Weekend
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix)
I’ve enjoyed both the first Knives Out films, though I didn’t love them. Critics went pretty cuckoo bananas over the Rian Johnson mysteries, just like they heaped praise on his Peacock series Poker Face. All of these feel a bit above average but far from the kind of thing you’d gush over, but maybe that’s just me. I’m excited to watch Daniel Craig’s charming Benoit Blanc back in action, joined this time by yet another star-studded cast including Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close and many more.
F1 The Movie — Apple TV
Brad Pitt’s big race car movie landed in theaters months ago, and now it’s finally racing onto Apple TV. I’m not a huge race car movie guy, though I absolutely loved Ford v Ferrari. Go figure. This looks like a pretty fun diversion.
TV Shows Currently Streaming Weekly
The Mighty Nein — Season 1 (Prime Video)
The Mighty Nein is pretty good so far, though a part of me wishes the new Critical Role animated series would release two episodes per week rather than just one. I suppose it may be my lack of familiarity with these characters, but I feel like I need to get to know them more before I can really get invested in the story. I like these new misfit heroes (especially Laura Bailey’s Jester) but I’m not warming to them as quickly as I did with The Legend of Vox Machina. Still good fun fantasy.
Pluribus — Season 1 (Apple TV)
We’re eight episodes into Pluribus and I’m just not feeling it, ladies and gentlemen. Some interesting things happen from time to time, but it’s just so slow and repetitive. If I have to hear that voicemail message the hivemind left for Carol (Rhea Seehorn) one more time I might go insane. During the latest episode, which sees Carol living her best life at long last and the Paraguayan guy, Manousos (Carlos Manuel Vesga) making the perilous journey north to the US, I kept thinking “This whole show would have made a pretty good movie.” Maybe I’ll change my mind in the end, but as much as I love Vince Gilligan’s past work, Pluribus suffers from way, way, way too much padding.
IT: Welcome to Derry — Season 1 Finale (HBO Max)
IT: Welcome to Derry keeps hitting us where it hurts. This show pulls no punches, and it’s actually kind of refreshing when you think about how timid Stranger Things has been in comparison. On the other hand, the It prequel keeps killing off my favorite characters, and when you do that you risk audiences not really caring anymore. At this point, there are very few remaining characters who I really care much about, and I have no faith that any of them will survive (except one, because he’s also in The Shining). Very twisted show but I’m enjoying it immensely. The finale drops this Sunday.
Blue Lights — Season 3 (BritBox)
You can read my review of Blue Lights Season 3 right here. I’m really enjoying this season a lot, though I think there’s a bit too much of a focus on the relationship stuff and conflict between characters over relationship issues and I hope they ease up on these storylines in Season 4. Still the best cop show on TV at the moment, especially if you enjoy UK dramas and Ireland in particular.
Landman — Season 2 (Paramount+)
Billy Bob Thornton is the main draw for Taylor Sheridan’s Texas oil business drama, but I’m still behind. I hear such mixed things, and my first impressions of the first couple episodes of Season 1 were also quite mixed. Some people praise this as the best Sheridan show ever. Others find the daughter/mother subplot too annoying and cringe. I’ll get around to it, I’m sure. It’s very popular!
Spartacus: House of Ashur — Season 1 (Starz)
While I loved shows like Rome on the TV cable network formerly known as HBO (RIP), I never got around to watching the Starz series, Spartacus. I should add that to my backlog. We now have a spinoff of that series set in an alternate timeline where one of its main characters didn’t actually die. Imagine a Game of Thrones spinoff all about the long, happy life of Ned Stark. I’d watch it.
And that’s all folks! Let me know what you’re watching and if I missed anything you think I should add to this guide. If there’s anything upcoming on your radar, let me know about that as well! You tell me: What are you watching these days? What else did I miss? What should I put on this list or add to my backlog? Let me know on Twitter, Instagram, Bluesky or Facebook.
