Georgia Tech QB Aaron Philo expected to enter NCAA transfer portal

Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos and Kelly Quinlan report. He played the past two seasons with the Yellow Jackets and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

Philo was a backup to Haynes King in 2024 and 2025, appearing in eight total games. He even received a start this season, leading Georgia Tech to a victory against Gardner-Webb on Sept. 6. He finished that game 21-of-28 passing for 373 yards and one touchdown to one interception.

Overall in the past two seasons, Philo was 59-of-102 passing for 938 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions. He also ran the ball 16 times for a total of 95 yards and a touchdown.

Aaron Philo played high school football at Price Avenue Christian School in Bogart, Georgia, where he was a three-star prospect in the 2024 class. He ranked as the No. 708 overall player and No. 46 quarterback in the cycle according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services.

Philo is the all-time leading passer in Georgia high school history with 13,922 yards, breaking a record that was previously held by Trevor Lawrence. He also led Prince Avenue to back-to-back state championships in his junior and senior seasons.

Out of high school, Philo committed to Georgia Tech over offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, and others. He’s sure to command interest from similar programs upon entering the portal.

With King also exhausting his eligibility, the Yellow Jackets will be in search of a new quarterback to start for the 2026 season. They finished 9-3 this past year and earned an invitation to the Pop Tarts Bowl to face BYU.

Changes coming for the transfer portal this offseason

The 15-day transfer portal this offseason will be the only window, opening Jan. 2 and closing on Jan. 16. The NCAA opted to eliminate the spring transfer portal window for football, meaning this will be the only opportunity for student athletes to enter their names.

The move to a one-time-only portal is supposed to allow schools to finish their season with their entire team before the transfer portal opens. As has been the previous standard, athletes on College Football Playoff teams still playing would have 5 days beginning the day after their team’s final game to enter the transfer portal.

This season’s CFP semifinals are set for Jan. 8 and 9. The CFP national championship game is scheduled for Jan. 19 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
