Enzo Maresca explains how Alejandro Garnacho helped Chelsea to keep a clean sheet in Everton win

Chelsea were able to bounce back from their defeat against Atalanta during the week with a win over Everton on Saturday.

Goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto inspired Enzo Maresca’s side to a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Alejandro Garnacho could not get his name on the scoresheet despite having a host of chances.

Enzo Maresca highlights Alejandro Garnacho’s pressing

Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana put in another solid display at the heart of Chelsea’s backline as a central defensive partnership.

However, Maresca also feels Garnacho and Joao Pedro deserve credit for the Blues’ clean sheet because of the amount of pressing that they did.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, the Chelsea manager said: “When you don’t concede it’s not just about one player, it’s about all the team. Joao Pedro’s press, Alejandro Garnacho’s press.”

Heading into the Premier League fixture, Garnacho had never lost against Everton, a record that the winger has managed to keep intact.

Chelsea’s next game is against Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup, a match that could see Garnacho get some rest.

Alejandro Garnacho’s number of big chances missed

While Maresca may have been pleased with Garnacho’s off-the-ball work, the Italian will be calling for a bit more from the Argentina international in attack going forward.

As per Sofascore, Garnacho missed three big chances in Saturday’s victory. In total, he had four shots, but none of them were on target.

Overall, Garnacho has just one goal in 10 Premier League appearances this term. His finishing, then, is something that he can work on.

The former Manchester United star is still a very young player, though, and has a lot of potential. You can have confidence that he will improve.

After disappointing results against Atalanta, Bournemouth and Leeds United, the most important thing is that Chelsea were able to win. Hopefully they can now build on this triumph. Their next Premier League game sees them travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle United.
