Crystal Palace target Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson in January sales

Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson is on Crystal Palace’s list of potential January signings as they look to strengthen Oliver Glasner’s squad for a push towards Champions League qualification.
Palace will be competing on multiple fronts for the rest of the campaign and are looking at a number of wide forwards including Wales international Johnson, who was signed by Spurs 2½ years ago from Nottingham Forest for £47.5million.
Glasner has played without Ismaila Sarr for the last three matches after the Senegal winger suffered ankle-ligament damage, with the 27-year-old also scheduled to play in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco if he recovers over the next month.
Sarr is a genuine winger in Palace’s squad and Jean-Philippe Mateta, their No 9, has been supported by Yéremy Pino, although the Spain midfielder is often deployed more centrally.
Whether Palace will be able to buy Johnson will be determined by Spurs’ stance on the 24-year-old and whether they need to freshen Thomas Frank’s squad themselves when the transfer window opens next month.
Johnson joined in 2023 and, regardless of his future, will have a place in Spurs folklore for his winning goal in the Europa League final last season against Manchester United, getting his studs to the ball ahead of André Onana.
How has Johnson got on this season?
Having scored the goal that won Spurs a major European trophy last season, Johnson has been playing under a new manager in the current campaign after Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou. Johnson has started six Premier League games and has come off the bench seven times.
He began the season with goals in his first two matches – against Burnley and Manchester City – and has scored against Doncaster in the Carabao Cup and Copenhagen in the Champions League. He has started once in the last six games in all competitions.
Do Palace need him?
It has been an excellent spell for Palace in the last couple of months, with the defeat by Manchester United their only loss in the last six Premier League games. It has taken them into the Champions League places and they would be in the mix to stay there if they maintain their consistency.
After losing Eberechi Eze in the summer, there were question marks over whether they could go better than last season when they won the FA Cup. But Pino has proved a shrewd signing, while the likes of Daniel Muñoz have continued to impress, although he currently has a knee injury. With the Europa Conference League also to play for, Glasner may welcome an extra forward. He made only three outfield changes to his line-up for the win over Shelbourne this week.
