ICSA warns of Bluetongue threat

Livestock imports from Northern Ireland must be halted due to the risk of Bluetongue, according to the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmer’s Association
Multiple cases of the disease, which is spread by biting midge, have been found in County Down.
ICSA President Sean McNamara said all it takes is for one midge to land on an infected sheep on the way to a factory: “That midge then becomes infected too, and once that happens it can spread the virus to farms in the surrounding area. That is how quickly this disease can move.”
