Vancouver Island downgraded to high streamflow advisory from flood watch

After a few days of being under a flood watch, Vancouver Island has now been downgraded to a high streamflow advisory by the River Forecast Centre.

A high streamflow advisory means that river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly but that no major flooding is expected, except possibly in low-lying areas.

A flood watch means that river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull and that flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur.

All of Vancouver Island was under a flood watch during the recent atmospheric river, but as of 11 a.m. on Dec. 17 had been downgraded to a high streamflow advisory.

“Rainfall rates have eased through the region this morning, along with cooling temperatures,” the River Forecast Centre said in a notice.

“Additional rainfall is expected on Thursday and Friday, with snow at higher elevations.”

The centre says that additional rainfall on Thursday and Friday may lead to additional streamflow rises on Vancouver Island.

“Heavy rain and high streamflow bring increased risk for unstable banks, river erosion, submerged roads, swift water hazards, flooding and landslides,” the notice says.

“Stay clear of the banks of swift running rivers and never drive across flooded roads, bridges or river crossings. At this time of year leaves can clog storm drains and impact urban drainage. Keep storm drains clear.”
