Trisha Yearwood loves making music with her husband, Garth Brooks — but they definitely work differently!

The “She’s in Love with the Boy” singer, 61, appeared on the Tuesday, December 16 episode of Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam podcast and discussed what it was like for her and the country rockstar, 63, to pen their new track “Merry Christmas Valentine.”

Yearwood admitted she doesn’t get to write songs with Brooks as often as she “would like,” attributing it to the fact that their “writing styles are very different.”

“I’m a Virgo, so I like to sit down, write it all out, and have it done. And he likes to not write anything down,” she explained. “He’ll throw out a line — like he threw out that whole idea of ‘Merry Christmas Valentine’ to me, which I’m like, ‘this is incredible, we need to write this,’ and then it disappeared for a couple of months, and then I’d hear him humming a melody through the house.”

“We started it in maybe 2022. Most songs I start at 11 a.m., and I’m done with it by 3. That’s how I write,” she shared. “He starts in ’22 and is done in ’25.”

Regardless of their different approaches to songwriting, Yearwood said Brooks always supported her in that lane, even when she didn’t have faith in her own ability.

“I was hard on myself, but over the years, one of my biggest cheerleaders was Garth,” she gushed. “He was the one who was saying, ‘Stop saying you’re not a writer. You’re a writer.’”

“It was really a joy to work with him,” she added. “I hope we do a lot more.”

“Merry Christmas, Valentine” was released on Yearwood’s latest album, Christmastime, which came out in November.
