London will not see a white Christmas this year, according to BBC Weather. Its experts are predicting constant rain across the capital on December 25, with just one hour of potential sunshine.
The grim news follows a less than festive forecast of grey, drizzly weather on Christmas Eve. In fact, the entire run up to the big day will be plagued by light showers. The heaviest rain on Christmas Day will be between 7am and 11am, as children across the city settle in to unwrap their gifts. Midday looks to be the best time for a walk, with temperatures hitting a high of 9C.
The rain will hold off in part at 3pm, when sunny intervals will attempt to break through the clouds. The rain will then begin again at 7pm and last into the evening.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast indicates a period of unsettled weather with wet spells affecting the whole UK. It reads: “Some heavy rain is possible anywhere, but it is likely to be heaviest and most persistent in the west and northwest, with sheltered parts of the east and southeast typically drier.
“Any snow will probably be confined to high ground in the north. Strong winds are possible at times with a risk of gales, especially along coasts and over higher ground.
“Temperatures are likely to be above normal overall. Later in the period, conditions may start to become a little more settled, with rainfall amounts decreasing and drier weather becoming more prevalent, especially in the south. This may mean an increasing amount of overnight fog and frost.”
The start of the year will then be subject to high pressure, leading to an increased amount of dry weather. However, rain and strong winds remain possible, though most likely in the north.
