‘Keep Australians safe’: PM pleads with premiers on gun laws

Anthony Albanese has reminded Australia’s premiers and chief ministers that their job is to keep people safe as his move to replicate John Howard’s tightening of gun laws after the Port Arthur massacre faced resistance from some states, as well as within the federal opposition.

A day after scrambling to release a package of proposed hate speech and other new laws to tackle antisemitism following the Bondi terrorist attack, the prime minister announced a national gun buyback to facilitate new restrictions on firearms imposed by the states.
