Macaulay Culkin Says ‘Die Hard’ Is Not a Christmas Movie and ‘Don’t Fight Me’: The Film ‘Would Still Work’ If ‘It Were Also St. Patrick’s Day’

Macaulay Culkin is Christmas movie royalty thanks to his iconic role as Kevin McCallister in 1990’s “Home Alone” and 1992’s “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” so perhaps he’s as good authority as any when it comes to answering one of the internet’s most hotly-debated film questions: Is “Die Hard” a Christmas movie?
“No, no it’s not. Don’t fight me!” Culkin recently answered during an interview with Mythical Kitchen. “It’s based around Christmas, but if it were also St. Patrick’s Day, it would still work. But you couldn’t do ‘Home Alone’ on Memorial Day. It doesn’t work that way.”
Culkin then quipped: “I’m the godfather of Christmas nowadays. My opinion has some sway in this argument.”
The internet has been debating whether or not Bruce Willis’ 1988 action movie classic is a Christmas movie for years. “Elf” star Zooey Deschanel recently said on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that “Die Hard” is her favorite Christmas movie. But Culkin is officially ruling the Christmas Eve-set “Die Hard” out of the running when it comes to Christmas movies.
Culkin recently made headlines during his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour when he said he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to returning as Kevin McCallister in a new “Home Alone” sequel. Although he added, “It would have to be just right.” Fortunately, Culkin already has a pitch for a sequel that he would be interested in doing.
“I kind of had this idea,” Culkin said. “I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.”
“Home Alone” and “Home Alone 2” director Chris Columbus told Entertainment Tonight in August that a new “Home Alone” movie should never be made.
“I think ‘Home Alone’ really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that,” Columbus said. “I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.”
